Shanghai Second Polytechnic University (SSPU) was founded in 1960, originally as “Shanghai Spare-time Polytechnic University”. The university was renamed “Shanghai Second Polytechnic University” in 1984. With approval of the Ministry of Education,  the university was transformed into a full-time vocational institution of higher learning in 2000. In 2001 the university merged Shanghai Donghu Vocational & Technical College and formed the new Shanghai Second Polytechnic University. It is a national exemplary higher vocational technology university with coordinated growth of multiple subjects. In 2002, SSPU moved to Jin Qiao Export Processing Zone of Pudong District. In 2003, with approval of Shanghai Municipality, the university became a full-time regular institution of higher education.

Located in Jin Qiao Education area of Pudong New District, the university covers an area of 782 mu. It is divided into six functional areas, including teaching area、administrative area、information area、hands-on training area、recreational and sports activity area and living area. It has 11 schools, including School of Mechanical & Electronic Engineering、School of Electronics and Electrical Engineering、School of Computer & Information、School of Business Management、School of Foreign Languages、School of International Exchange、School of Humanities、School of Science、School of Applied Arts Design、School of City Construction and Environmental Engineering、College of Adult and Continuing Education and Technician College approved by Shanghai Municipality. The university has 5 disciplines, including Engineering、 Economics、Management、Literature and Science, and offers 9 categories, such as Engineering、Electronics and Information、Environment and Safety、Economics、Management and Engineering、Commercial and Industrial Management、Foreign Language Literature、Art and Mathematics. At present, the university has 25 undergraduate specialities, 44 higher vocational specialities. It has 191 staff who have got senior professional post titles and enrolls more than 10,000 full-time students.

 

The university has set up a batch of research institutes, such as Energy Conservation Research Institute、 Optical Mechanical and Electronic Research Institute、Electronic Waste Resource Utilization Research Institute and Higher Education Research Institute, which fulfilled several National Natural Science Foundation Research Projects and 863 Key research projects. In 2004, the university obtained 2 second prizes of Shanghai Municipal Science & Technology Progress Award, 1 second prize of Shanghai Municipal Outstanding Achievement in Philosophy and Social Sciences, and 3 first prizes of Shanghai Municipal Outstanding Teaching Achievement. Since 2005, the university has been awarded the title of Shanghai Municipal Civilized Organization continuously.

The university currently is a “National Advanced Vocational Educational Organization”, the chair of “All-China Joint Presidents’Conference of Tertiary Vocational Colleges and Universities”, the vice chair of “Shanghai Association of Cooperative Education” and “Shanghai Association of Vocational Education”, and the undertaking organization of the “Tertiary Vocational Education Network” of the Ministry of Education; is the “National Key Training Base for Teachers of Tertiary Vocational Education” of the Ministry of Education, the “Shanghai Training Base for Teachers of Tertiary Vocational Education” and the “Shanghai Training Base for Teachers of Chinese-foreign Cooperative Vocational Education”; is an all-the-year-round venue for “Shanghai Computer Application Proficiency Test”, and the Charity Education Training Center of Shanghai Municipal Charity Foundation.

For more than forty years, the university has cultivated more then eighty thousand application-oriented technical graduates for Shanghai’s modernization development, represented by Li Bin and Bao Qifan, the two famous national model workers and distinguished inventors, and has achieved outstanding economic benefit and social effect. Ex-President of China Mr. Jiang Zemin celebrated the first Teacher’s Day at the university, and wrote the inscription in person for the university: “Develop Tertiary Vocational Education, and Cultivate Qualified Professionals for China ’s Modernization Construction”. State Councilor Chen Zhili, Shanghai Municipal leaders like Han Zheng, Gong Xueping, Yin Yicui, and leaders of other Ministries and Commissions Directly under the State Council , Shanghai Science & Education Party Committee, and the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission have inspected SSPU and given constructive advices.
