About Shanghai Second Polytechnic University
Shanghai Second Polytechnic University (SSPU) was founded in 1960 originally as “ Shanghai Spare-time Polytechnic University ”. The university was renamed “ Shanghai Second Polytechnic University ” in 1984. W ith approval of the Ministry of Education, the university was transformed into a full-time vocational institution of higher learning in 2000 . In 2001 the university merged Shanghai Donghu Vocational & Technical College and formed the new Shanghai Second Polytechnic University . In 2003, with approval of Shanghai Municipality , the university became a full-time regular institution of higher education.
Located in Jin Qiao Export Processing Zone of Pudong District, the university covers an area of 782 mu (including 200 mu of reserved land for the second phase of campus construction), with the total floor space amounting to 240,000 square meters, and total fixed assets investment of educational instruments and facilities worth 1.2 hundred million RMB. The university consists of 10 academic schools and directly affiliated academic departments (the School of Mechanical & Electronic Engineering, etc.) and 7research institutes (the Shanghai Energy Conservation Institute, etc.). The university offers 57 programs including 17 undergraduate programs, within 9 categories, and 5 disciplines such as Engineering, Economics, Management, Literature, and Science. The university currently has over 460 faculty members, including 181 full professors and associate professors, and enrolls more than 9,000 full-time students. Since 2000, the university has fulfilled more than 300 research projects, including 3 National 863 key research projects and 3 National Natural Science Foundation research projects; has published 25 academic books, 27 translation books, and 686 academic papers, including 16 papers indexed by SCI, EI or ISTP; has obtained many achievements in High & New Technology and Social Sciences Research, including 4 second p rize s of Shanghai Municipal Science & Technology Progress Award, 1 second prize of Shanghai Municipal Outstanding Achievement in Philosophy and Social Sciences, and 3 first prizes of Shanghai Municipal Outstanding Teaching Achievement.
The university currently is a “National Advanced Vocational Educational Organization”, the chair of “All-China Joint Presidents’ Conference of Tertiary Vocational Colleges and Universities”, the vice chair of “Shanghai Association of Cooperative Education” and “Shanghai Association of Vocational Education”, and the undertaking organization of the “Tertiary Vocational Education Network” of the Ministry of Education; is the “National Key Training Base for Teachers of Tertiary Vocational Education” of the Ministry of Education, the “Shanghai Training Base for Teachers of Tertiary Vocational Education” and the “Shanghai Training Base for Teachers of Chinese-foreign Cooperative Vocational Education”; is an all-the-year-round venue for “Shanghai Computer Application Proficiency Test”, and the Charity Education Training Center of Shanghai Municipal Charity Foundation. In 2005 the university was awarded the title of Civilized Organization of Shanghai.
For more than forty years, the university has cultivated more then eighty thousand application-oriented technical graduates for Shanghai’s modernization development, represented by Li Bin and Bao Qifan, the two famous national model workers and distinguished inventors, and has achieved outstanding economic benefit and social effect. Ex-President of China Mr. Jiang Zemin celebrated the first Teacher’s Day at the university, and wrote the inscription in person for the university: “Develop Tertiary Vocational Education, and Cultivate Qualified Professionals for China ’s Modernization Construction”. State Councilor Chen Zhili, Shanghai Municipal leaders like Han Zheng, Gong Xueping, Yin Yicui, and leaders of other Ministries and Commissions Directly under the State Council , Shanghai Science & Education Party Committee, and the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission have inspected SSPU and given constructive advices.
